The Design Process

1. Consultation

Firstly, we meet, chat through all your ideas & the design process and have a look around your garden. This is your opportunity to let us know everything you would like in your garden and will inform the basis of the design. This takes about an hour.

2. Brief & Fee Proposal

We then draw up the information from our meeting into a brief for you to check, add anything or change anything. We can swap ideas and photos to feed into this too, so the garden really reflects your style and ideas. Along with the brief we provide a fee proposal tailored to your needs.

3. Site Analysis & Pre-Design

The next step is to carry out a survey which will enable an accurate, scaled design to be produced. A full topographical survey is required for most gardens, although our own team can carry this out for small, simple, level gardens. All gardens need a garden survey where we come and take photos, soil samples, notes, take in the surroundings and get to know the garden. All of this information is then drawn up digitally, assessed and considered ahead of the design phase.

4. Concept Design

This is the main design stage, where we research, design and map where all elements go from paving, walls, steps & paths to defining planting areas and key trees, taking in all aspects of the brief, making sure everything flows and that we have a cohesive and technically accurate plan to work from.

We also provide concept, planting style and material images, material specification as well as 3D visuals of your newly designed garden, to help you envision how the space will look.

At this point we meet to talk through the proposed design and we can work through any edits, as well as looking at some material samples and talking through planting ideas. After this, we produce the Masterplan, the final blueprint document of your garden layout.

5. Detailed Design

These drawings are produced for the contractors to be able to accurately and easily understand how the garden is to be built. This includes material layouts, scope of works document, dimensions, levels, any construction drawings that may be needed for complex structures such as steps, outdoor kitchens or bespoke pergolas and lighting schedules.

6. Planting Design

Our comprehensive planting design service includes Planting Plans, photo Plant ID, & Plant list. The Planting Plans map the name and location of each plant, using our extensive knowledge and expertise to guide this. We source and order of all plants and trees from high quality nurseries.

7. Tendering

Once we have the design specification pack for the contractors, we can ask trusted, skilled Landscaping Contractors to quote for the build of the garden and together we choose which contractor will undertake the work. The contractor will then book in a time slot, usually from 3-6 months from confirmation.

8. The Build

Projects last from a minimum of 2 weeks for very small, simple gardens, to 3-6 weeks for small to medium size gardens, to several months for large scale projects. Medium to large scale projects can be build in phases.

9. Planting

After the majority of the hard landscaping is built we can plant your garden, working with and coordinate gardeners, our team and the Landscaping Contractors to carry out planting work. From here, we offer guidance for establishing and taking care of your new plants and are often involved in an ongoing capacity, guiding you or your gardening team and developing the plans over time.
